Men Take First Place as Cross Country Opens Season with Rothenberg Run

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Brown cross country programs opened up their 2023 seasons on Friday by hosting the Rothenberg Cross Country Invitational at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. A strong team effort from start to finish helped the men's team take first place with 22 points, with senior Evan Sherman leading the team in second place overall. The women's team took home fourth place with sophomore Julia Schreifer leading the Bears in sixth place.
The Bears' pack controlled the tempo and ran at the front for most of the 6K men's race, with Brown taking six of the top 10 spots overall, and all 10 of the team's runners finishing in the top 15 out of 45 runners. Brown's 22 points was followed by URI (55), Boston U. (80), Providence (99) and Holy Cross (103).
Sherman took runner-up overall in 18:31.2, followed by freshman Matt Wing who took third place overall in his collegiate debut with a time of 18:43.8. Junior Miles Mullins (18:45.5) placed fifth overall, followed by Tommy Gaffey (18:53.1) in seventh and Justin Hickey (18:54.9) in eighth. Freshman Matthew Doherty (10th/18:58.1) and senior Jesse Edelstein (12th/19:03.2) rounded out Brown's top seven.
On the women's side, Brown raced with a lineup of seven sophomores in the three-kilometer event and took home fourth place with 84 points. Providence took the team title with 23 points, followed by URI (61), Boston U. (67), Brown and Holy Cross (125).
Schriefer led the Bears' pack with a sixth place overall finish in 11:05.5. Julia Antony (11:31.9) and Olivia Takla (11:32.7) finished back-to-back in 17th and 18th places, respectively. Emily Mrakovcic (23rd/11:38.8) and Sara Perez (24th/11:41.3) rounded out the team's top five, while Juli Gonalez and Olivia Bergin completed the team's top seven.
The Bears will return to action next weekend, splitting between two meets with the Friar Invitational at Highland Park on Friday, and the Nassaney Invitational at Bryant in Smithfield on Saturday.
