PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Simon Hatcher of Brown men's crew was tabbed the IRCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday. Hatcher was named a finalist for the award earlier in the week along with Ryan Walter from Georgetown, Harril Saunders of Princeton and Frederik Breuer from Cal.
From Portland, Ore., Hatcher maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout his four-year career at Brown, while racing in the First Varsity 8 for the majority of the season.
"Simon has raced in the Varsity 8 at the IRA for two years and has also received the highest academic marks at Brown," said Head Coach Paul Cooke. "A role model for his teammates, he always brings great energy to practice and to his schoolwork. With interests in fluid mechanics and energy technologies, particularly around efforts to develop sustainable practices and technology for the aviation industry, Simon is pursuing a Bachelors of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He has also been nominated to join Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society."
Hatcher rowed for the 1V8 in a victory over Boston University, and helped the team to a fourth-place finish at Eastern Sprints and sixth overall at the IRA Championships.
