Women's Crew Qualifies Each Boat for A/B Semifinals After Day One of NCAA Championships
5/26/2023 11:13:00 AM | Women's Crew
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - All three boats for Brown women's crew advanced to the A/B semifinals after a successful first day of racing at the NCAA Championships on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. Friday morning.
The First Varsity 8 finished third in its heat, while the Second Varsity 8 took second in its Friday heat, and the First Varsity 4 raced to second place in its first competition of the weekend.
Racing first was the 1V8 with freshman Isla Wilding in the stroke seat. The crew clocked a time of 6:38.953 for third place, which was close behind Cal (6:35.995), and nearly four seconds faster than Ohio State (6:42.127) for the final spot in the top semifinal race on Saturday. Stanford (6:26.549) won the race by nearly 10 seconds. Brown maintained the third-place position throughout the entire race, holding off a late push from the Buckeyes.
Bruno's 2V8, stroked by freshman Hannah Hickson, finished second with a time of 6:43.170 and battled in a tight race for the top three spots with first-place Yale (6:40.210) and third-place Ohio State (6:43.200). Brown and Ohio State were within one second of each other through the first 1500 meters, while Yale would hold a slim lead throughout. Ohio State closed the gap in the final moments of the race, but Brown had enough in the tank to win by the slimmest of margins.
The final race of the day saw Brown's A4 finish second with a time of 7:31.278. Stroked by senior Eloise Catlin, the A4 got off to a strong start with first-place Virginia (7:27.030) and third-place Michigan (7:42.806). Those three boats separated themselves from the rest of the field to advance to the A/B semifinal.
The NCAA Championships will resume on Saturday, May 27, with the I Eight A/B semifinals getting underway at 8:36 a.m., followed by the II Eight races at 9:24 a.m., and the Four at 10:12 a.m.
