Women's Crew Set for 26th-Straight NCAA Championship Appearance

2023 marks the first year that the Camden County Boathouse and Pennsauken will host the NCAA Championships, but third time that racing will take place on the Cooper River. Bruno is one of four Ivy programs competing at the 2022 NCAA Championship, joining Penn, Princeton, and Yale. Brown looks for its eighth NCAA Title since 1999 and first since 2011.
FRIDAY HEATS
Varsity 8 - Heat 3 Lane 4 - 9:24 a.m.
The Bears are the fifth seed in the V8 race and will square off against Gonzaga, California, Stanford, Ohio State, and Jacksonville.
Second Varsity 8 - Heat 1 Lane 2 - 9:48 a.m.
The Bears are the ninth seed in the 2V8 race and will square off against Indiana, Yale, Ohio State and Southern California.
Varsity 4 - Heat 3 Lane 3 - 11:00 a.m.
The Bears are the third seed in the V4 race and will race against Navy, Michigan, Virginia, Southern Cal, and George Washington.
THE 2023 FIELD
• The 22-team Championship field features 11 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large selections.
• The Bears qualified for the Championship for the 26th straight season and have not missed a NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997.
• Brown is one of four Ivy programs in the field along with AQ Princeton, Penn, and Yale.
• Four teams competing from the Ivy League is tied for the most of any conference in 2023 with the Pac-12 and Big-10, while the ACC will have three programs competing.
• The remainder of the field are all automatic qualifiers with SMU from the AAC, George Washington from the A10, Northeastern from the CAC, Jacksonville from the MAAC, Navy from the Patriot League, Gonzaga from the WCC, and Texas from the Big-12.
THE STREAK IS ALIVE AND WELL
• The Bears earned their 26th consecutive berth to the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 16 to remain perfect and participate in each and every NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997.
• Brown is one of three teams to qualify for and compete in every Championship along with conference rival Princeton and west coast powerhouse Washington.
• In the previous 25 appearances, Brown has captured seven National Titles, three runner-up finishes, and five third-place finishes. In total, the Bears have finished in the top-three of the team standings in 15-of-24 Championships.
THE SEEDING
• After wrapping up the 2023 season with another title at Eastern Sprints and three medals at the Ivy League Championship, the Bears are ready for the NCAA Championships.
• Brown's V8 crew earned the five seed, the 2V8 crew earned the nine seed, and the V4 crew earned the three seed at this weekend's Championship.
• At the 2022 NCA Championships, Brown finished seventh as a team, while the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 each finished in sixth place. Bruno's Second Varsity was victorious in the Petite Final.
SEEN MORE THAN HALF
• Out of the 22 programs in the 2023 NCAA Championships field, the Bears have faced 13 of them during the season.
• Brown opened the spring slate in late march to face Princeton for the first time.
• At the B1G Invitational, Brown raced against Ohio State, Duke, Rutgers, Indiana, Stanford, and Michigan.
• Then at the Ivy League Invite, Brown faced off against Southern Cal, Rutgers again, and Virginia.
• At Eastern Sprints, Bruno competed with Syracuse, Rutgers for the third time, and Northeastern.
• Most recently, Brown faced Penn, Princeton, and Yale at the Ivy Championships.
THE IVY CHAMPIONSHIP
• The Bears hit the water at Lake Quinsigamond for the 2023 Ivy League Championship on Sunday, May 14, the final tune-up before this weekend's Regatta.
• Bruno finished fourth in the team standings. Taking second place was the A4, while the 3V8 and B4 each finished third. Brown's First Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 4 all finished in fourth place, respectively.
• Brown totaled 32 team points for fourth place. The Tigers of Princeton received the Ivy League AQ for the second-straight year with 44 points, while Yale (42) and Penn (38) were ahead of the Bears.
ALL-IVY SELECTIONS
• Three Bears earned All-Ivy League recognition for their efforts during the season.
• Sophomore Caroline Schmitz was named First Team All-Ivy after rowing in the First Varsity 8 in either seat seven or eight during the season.
• Junior Dahlia Levine was selected to the All-Ivy League Second Team after racing in the successful First Varsity 8 during the year.
• Senior Izzy Aronin was named to the Academic All-Ivy team as well.
SPRINTING TO SUCCESS
• Brown competed at the Eastern Sprints on April 30 and claimed four Grand Final titles.
• The Bears captured the team championship for the 12th time since 1990 after taking a seven-year break from the sprints from 2015-2021.
• The Varsity 8 crew took the podium for the 10th time since 1988 with the win on Lake Quinsigamond.
BIG PERFORMANCE AT THE B1G
• The Bears competed in the two-day B1G Invitational in early-April at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
• Brown had a strong showing against several 2023 Championship crews, taking wins over Ohio State, Duke, Rutgers, Indiana, Stanford, and Michigan.
ONE HOME RACE
• Brown came away with victories in each race in its only home event of the season on April 22 against Cornell.
• It was the first home race for the Bears since competing against Cornell on May 4 of 2019.
