Men's Crew Collects Two Victories in Hard Fought Races at Harvard
4/8/2023 3:31:00 PM | Men's Crew
BOSTON – Brown men's crew captured two wins Saturday morning against Harvard on the Charles River, but it was the Crimson coming away with the Stein Cup.
"The racing between Brown and Harvard this morning was thrilling and impressive," said Paul Cooke, the Men's Crew Head Rowing Chair. "In every race, the crews pushed each other for the entire course. I thought both teams were well prepared and ready to perform."
"In such close races, it was easy to see slight differences in speed and to notice key moments, which will be very helpful going forward. These early season contests are critical in the development of the team."
The Second Varsity 8 and the Fifth Varsity 8 each pulled away for victories, while the First Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8 and fourth Varsity 8 were all competitive in their races.
Brown's first victory of the day came with the 2V8. The boats were even in the early going of the race, but the Bears gained the advantage and pulled away with a time 6:06.3, ahead of Harvard's 6:08.9.
The 5V8 took the final race of the day by over two seconds, leaving no doubt with a time of 6:26.3, while Harvard crossed the finish line in 6:28.9.
Brown's 1V8 (6:01.2) had the best time of the day but fell to the Crimson (5:59.3), while the 3V8 (6:04.0) made a late push but could not catch up to the Harvard boat (6:02.6). The Bears 4V8 (6:12.9) fell in their race as well to Harvard's fourth varsity (6:07.5).
"Congratulations to the Harvard Varsity for winning the Stein Cup," continued Cooke. "They were strong in the middle thousand and rowed with poise and power to take the victory."
"The entire Brown squad put forth a great effort. Every person on the team was important and helped generate the energy that resulted in five strong races and two terrific wins. The Second Varsity and the Fifth Varsity earned hard fought victories. The team spirit has been terrific and I expect it will be our biggest asset going into the Championships."
