No. 7 Men's Crew Edged by No. 10 Northeastern for Dreissigacker Cup
4/15/2023 7:24:00 PM | Men's Crew
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite Brown men's crew winning three of the four races on Saturday on the Seekonk River, it was Northeastern who took home the Dreissigacker Cup with a narrow First Varsity 8 victory.
The entire squad raced well and put in a great effort," said Paul Cooke, the Men's Crew Head Rowing Chair. "We had a good week of practice and the crews are challenging each other and improving each day. The Varsity race appeared to be a tough loss, as our crew was in control in the middle of the race and then lost the lead, but it was a strong performance against a good opponent and I know this group will learn from it and bounce back."
Â
The Bears won each of their first three races in convincing fashion. Racing Started with the Fourth Varsity 8 clocking in a time of 6:34.8 compared to Northeastern's 6:42.8. Brown's Third Varsity 8 (6:22.8) then crossed the finish line nearly 12 seconds ahead of the Huskies (6:34.6). The Second Varsity 8 (6:21.5) was dominant as well, finishing well in front of the boat from Northeastern (6:29.62).
Â
The First Varsity 8 came down to final moments. Brown led for most of the race until Northeastern made a late push and took the lead in the final stretch. With the aggressive racing, an opposing pair of oars nicked each other, but the officials declared that neither side was at fault and Northeastern was declared the winner.
"I have confidence in the competitive spirit in our boathouse. The fifth Varsity is pushing the fourth and the upward pressure we have will make all the crews faster as we come into the Championships."
