PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball kept its chances alive for the Ivy League Tournament with a doubleheader sweep over Yale on Friday at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears will clinch the four-seed in the tournament with a win over Yale on Saturday and one loss by Dartmouth in the Big Green's last four games.
GAME 1: BROWN 6, YALE 3
A strong performance by Alexis Guevara in the circle and 11 hits by the offense led Brown to a 6-3 win over Yale in the series opener.
Dara English, Laurel Moody and Julia Gubner all had two hits. Gubner and Jasmine Hsiao each drove in two runs with Hsiao hitting a home run.
Brown struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Dara English walked and moved to second on a single by Moody. Leah Carey entered to run for English and two batters later, Gubner singled to left to score Carey.
The Bears kept the offense going in the second with Vanessa Alexander singling to second to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Hsiao cleared the scoreboard in left field with a two-run shot, her seventh home run of the season, putting the Bears up 3-0.
Yale got a run back in the third but the Bears responded in the bottom of the inning. Moody walked to start the inning and got to second on a sac bunt. In the next at bat, Gubner tripled down the right field line to bring home Moody. Lily Berlinger stepped to the plate and lined a double to right center to score Gubner giving Brown a 5-1 lead.
Brown got its sixth run in the fourth as English singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a double by Moody to left in the next at bat. Moe Kastens singled to center to score English.
Yale hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-3 but Brown starter Alexis Guevara settled down and closed out the game for the win. Guevara earned the win allowing four hits and striking out five batters.
GAME 2: BROWN 1, YALE 0
Erin Elgas earned the complete game shutout win as Brown won 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader against Yale.
Elgas scattered six hits and struck out two batters to pick up her second win of the season.
Five different Bears finished with hits in the win.
Both offenses were shut down for the first three innings until Yale picked up a leadoff double to start the fourth. Elgas buckled down and got three groundouts that kept the run off the board.
The Bears struck with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the frame by English and Moody to put a runner in scoring position. Niki Kim entered to run for English and both runners moved up 60 feet after a sac bunt by Kastens. In the next at bat, Gubner flew out to center to bring home Kim.
The one run would be all Elgas would need to lead the Bears to the win. Yale got a runner on in both the fifth and sixth inning but never threatened. In the seventh, Yale had runners on second and third with one out. Alexander got a ground ball in the next at bat at threw out the runner heading home. The final out was a ground ball to Gubner, giving the Bears the doubleheader sweep.
