PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball fell in eight innings, 3-2, at Providence on Wednesday night to close out non-conference play for the year.
Erin Elgas threw a complete game, throwing seven innings, allowing just two earned runs. Dara English and Laurel Moody each had two hits on the night as the Bears finished with seven knocks.
Providence had the first chance of the game to get runs on the board, getting runners to second and third with two outs in the second, but a fantastic diving catch by Lauren Long in right field ended the inning.
Brown responded in the third with a base hit by Liv Kam to start the inning. Kim moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a flyout. Vanessa Alexander flew out to center in the next at bat to end the inning.
The Bears broke through in the fourth as English led off with double off the wall in right center. Moody singled to left to move English to third and a wild pitch brought English home to put Brown up 1-0.
Providence took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs. The Friars loaded the bases and scored on an infield single and groundout.
Julia Gubner singled in the top of the seventh and Brianna Rodriguez was brought in to run for Gubner. A sac bunt by Berlinger moved Rodriguez to second. After a strikeout, the Bears were down to their final strike when Jadey Hagiwara singled to center field to score Rodriguez and tie up the game.
