PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears opened the 2023 spring slate with matches against the Yale Bulldogs, taking a 60-0 victory in a shortened 15s match and two 7s wins at a rainy Berylson Family Fields on Saturday.
"It was a great first outing for the team this spring, and the team showed considerable improvement in physicality," said Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "They've retained quite a bit of our 15s IQ from the fall and are building on that and it was really great to get our first 7s matches under our belts. Even with the wet and windy conditions, they were able to move the ball well.
"We are so grateful to get a match against Yale and have a great platform on which to build for the rest of the season."
Brown and Yale played 20 minute halves in the opening 15s match to begin the day. Brown took a 31-0 lead into the halftime break with five different Bears touching down for tries.
The Bears continued the strong play in the second half as Akilah Cathey, Morgan Cunningham, and Mahdia Parker all picked up their second scores of the match.
In the first 7s match, Nikki Lynch recorded two tries in the first half and added a third in the second half. Morgan Cunningham added two tries as the Bears took a 34-0 victory.
Brown closed the day with a 27-0 win in the final 7s match. Hattie Grant recorded two tries with Mikayla Atoigue, Jania Vandevoorde, and Kendall Cunningham scoring.
Brown heads to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions on Sunday, March 19. Opening kickoff is set for 11 a.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.
