Women's Rugby Picks Up Three Wins at Penn State
3/19/2023 2:17:00 PM | Women's Rugby
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bears continued the strong start to the spring season with three wins over Penn State, taking a 15s win and two 7s victories over the Nittany Lions on Sunday.
"The team continues to improve every single day and transfer skills into the matches," said Kathleen Flores Head Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "We have seen an increase in physicality and intensity and it's really great to see the team become more and more confident each time we step onto the pitch.
"We have seen freshman Kate Muldoon make an impressive transition into a new position at scrumhalf and she has really stepped up to the challenge. The senior leadership is really building up the classes behind them and the coaching staff is just so excited for the future of the squad."
In the first 15s match, the Bears took a 26-0 victory behind a pair of tries from Akilah Cathey. The Memphis, Tennessee native scored in the third and 36th minutes with Julia Murray hitting two of her three conversions in the match.
Emerson Goodrich touched down in the 18th minute and Nikki Lynch capped the scoring in the 42nd minute to push the score to 26.
The Bears captured the first 7s match with a 36-5 win as Cathey, Goodrich, and Lynch each added a try. Jania Vandevoorde and Mahdia Parker both found the end zone and Morgan Cunningham closed the match with her first score of the afternoon.
In the second 7s match, Carter Bedford and Aziza Alford scored in the fifth and eighth minutes, respectively, with Bedford adding the conversion on the latter to make it 12-0.
Morgan Cunningham added her second and third scores of the day to push the score to 22-0.
Brown competes in the Crimson 7s next Saturday (Mar. 25) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Saturday's tournament will stream on ESPN+.
