NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Brown baseball team jumped in front of reigning Ivy champion Columbia in the early innings on Friday, but the Lions roared back to take game one of the season's first Ivy League weekend series by a final score of 10-3.
Sophomores Gunner Boree and Nathan Brasher each went 2-for-4 at the plate while Boree knocked in a pair of runs. Freshman DJ Dillehay had an RBI single and senior Jacob Burley added a hit and two runs scored.
After two quick outs to start the second, Jared Johnson, Boree and Dillehay strung three straight singles together to take a 1-0 lead, as Dillehay plated Johnson by lining a breaking ball the other way to right field.
The Lions answered back to take the lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-run homer to left field. They added two more in the fourth inning, again after two outs, courtesy of an RBI triple and single.
Brown manufactured a run in the sixth to pull within 4-2 when Burley drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a single by Brasher, moved to third on a sac bunt by Jared Johnson, and came in to score on a ground ball by Boree.
Columbia broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting on the first pitch when Cole Fellows led off with a solo home run. All told, the Lions scored four times on just one hit in the inning, aided by three walks, a hit by pitch, and one error.
After loading the bases with one out in the eighth inning, Boree lined his second hit of the day into left field to plate Burley and make it an 8-3 game. Columbia tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded walk and sac fly.
Due to the expected weather in New York on Saturday, the final two games of the weekend series will now be played on Sunday. First pitch of game one is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
