Bedell Sets Floor Record, Wins Two Titles as Gymnastics Takes Fourth at GEC Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It was an incredible night for sophomore gymnast Julia Bedell, who captured the Gymnastics East Conference individual championships on both vault and floor. Her efforts helped lead the Bears to a fourth place finish at the second annual GEC Championships, which were hosted by the College of William & Mary. Six Brown gymnasts also combined to earn seven all-conference honors.
Bedell's floor score of 9.950 set a new program record, surpassing the previous mark of 9.925, which she held along with Olympian Alicia Sacramone, Corey Holman and Caroline Morant. Her 9.850 on vault tied her own career-high, which is fourth on the program's all-time list.
For her efforts throughout this season, Bedell was also named the GEC's Co-Specialist of the Year, which was announced as part of the post-championship awards ceremony.
Competing in the evening session, the Bears' team score of 193.750 landed them in fourth place. Defending champion and No. 1 seed Penn took home the team title with 194.925 points, followed by Yale (194.200) and West Chester (194.075).

Starting off the meet on vault, Brown posted a score of 48.700 and took the top two spots overall, led by Bedell at 9.850 in first place and junior Angela Xing finishing runner-up at 9.775, tying her season-high. Lauren Kramer scored 9.750 to land in fifth place, and freshman Sophia Dewar tied for seventh at 9.700.
Next on bars, the Bears put up 48.525 and were led by a season-high of 9.800 from Paige Richter in fifth place. Senior Jasmine Lee posted a career-high 9.775, as did junior Lauren McKeown, both of whom tied for seventh. Senior Ella Poley posted a 9.750.
On beam, Brown posted a score of 47.425, led by senior Abby Contello at 9.825, who finished tied for third. Freshman Liza Marcus tied for fifth overall after posting a 9.800.
Ending on floor, the Bears rebounded with the highest floor score of the meet at 49.100, their second-highest score of the year and just off their program record. Bedell anchored the event for the Bears with a dazzling score of 9.950 to take home the gold and set a new program record, that had originally been set by Sacramone back in 2007.
Three Bears – Poley, Kramer an Umi El Mammann - followed by tying for seventh place at 9.825. Poley and El Mammann both set new career-highs, while Kramer's mark tied her personal-best.
Brown has qualified for the team competition at USAG Nationals, which will take place beginning on April 6 in Denton, Texas.
