
Women's Lacrosse Tops Sacred Heart, 14-10

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Sacred Heart 14-10 Saturday afternoon in Connecticut. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Pioneers fall to 1-6.
Annie Burton led Brown with a career-high five goals and six points. On the day, eight different players scored for the Bears, with Maddie Joyce and Jessie Bakes picking up two goals each. Joyce, Claire Jeschke, and Jackie Mason each recorded two assists.
Paige Gillen led Brown with eight draw controls, while Emmie Lau caused a team-high three turnovers and led the Bears with four ground balls.
In goal for Brown, Claire Mahoney got the start and the win while making six saves. Margaret Woodberry saw four minutes of action and made one save.
The Bears opened up a 4-0 lead to start the game, with Joyce recording a point on each of the first three. She assisted on Burton's strike to start the game and then scored the following two herself.
SHU got one back to end the first, but then Brown exploded for a 5-0 run in the second to go up 9-1 with 9:54 to play in the half. The Pioneers scored twice to end the second to send the Bears into the break up 9-3.
Bakes opened the scoring in the second half, but the Pioneers responded with four straight to close to the gap to 10-7.
Burton then scored numbers four and five on the day, followed by Alexandra Bowman's first collegiate goal and Nathalie Ahn's third of the season to go up 14-7 with just over ten minutes remaining.
SHU got a few back as time ran down, but couldn't get closer than within four before time expired.
Brown will return home next Tuesday, March 14 for a 5 p.m. matchup with UMass.
