Comeback Comes Up Short as Women's Lacrosse Falls to #20 UMass

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team fell to No. 20 UMass 14-9 Tuesday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears used a late 4-0 run to pull the game within four with over 10 minutes remaining, but couldn't get any closer as the Minutewomen were able to escape with the victory.
Brown falls to 3-3 on the season, while UMass improves to 7-1 with the result.
Three Bears led the team with three points each: Maddie Joyce (3G), Leah Captuo (2G, 1 A), and Mia Mascone (1G, 2 A). Claire Jeschke moved within one point of 100 career points after scoring once and assisting on another, while Julia Ford also finished with two points (1G, 1A). Annie Burton assisted once and Greta Criqui scored one goal.
Emmie Lau won a game-high eight draws, helping the Bears hold a decisive advantage in draw controls, 17-10. Lau also led Brown with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
In goal for the Bears, Claire Mahoney got the start and made one save. Margaret Woodberry came on in relief at the end of the second quarter and made a career-high seven saves.
UMass opened the game on a 5-0 run before Joyce recorded the Bears' first of the day during the final minute of the opening quarter.
Brown was able to put together a 3-0 run during the second to pull the score to 9-5 with two and a half minutes remaining in the opening half. The Minutewomen got two back at the end of the frame to go into the break ahead 11-5.
Trailing 13-5 late in the third, the Bears began to stage a comeback. A Jeschke free position goal was sandwiched between a pair from Joyce before Caputo finished the run with her second of the day. The Bears trailed 13-9 with 10:35 to play.
Brown appeared to pull within three, but a goal by Burton was called off by the refs. UMass scored on the ensuing possession and it was all the Minutewoman needed to put the game away.
Brown will have the weekend off from competition before returning to action next Tuesday, March 21 at in-state rival Bryant for a 4 p.m. matchup.
