Men's Hockey Drops Conference Game to Clarkson
2/4/2023 10:00:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Clarkson Golden Knights (12-13-3, 6-8-2 ECAC) struck for two goals in the first five minutes of play and went on to take a 6-2 road win over the Brown Bears (8-13-2, 4-10-2 ECAC) Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"Unfortunately, we had some injuries and a really key injury to the best goalie in the country and I don't think we helped our young freshman much at all this weekend," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have to get better in terms of protecting him and making sure that we're a little more structured defensively."
"We have to be a little better around the net, our special teams have to be much better, and we can't start off games in the hole."
Ayrton Martino gave the Golden Knights the lead 3:06 into the opening period, collecting a pass from Anthony Callin in the slot before beating Jacob Zacharewicz (30 saves) five-hole.
Clarkson doubled the lead 1:56 later as Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup, a University of Maine transfer, recorded his eighth goal of the season.
The Bears responded before the end of the frame and junior Jordan Tonelli rifled a wrist shot from the top of the left circle to beat Golden Knight goaltender Ethan Haider (26 saves). Gavin Puskar and Luke Krys picked up the assists on the marker.
Clarkson made it a two-goal game after nearly 15 minutes of back-and-forth play to open the second. Mathieu Gosselin found the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season at 13:44 of the frame with Schmidt-Svejstrup and Alex Campbell assisting.
Campbell made it 4-1 Clarkson 1:16 into the third period for his first goal of the night. Campbell struck again at 5:59 and 14:33 of the frame for a natural hat trick.
Gavin Puskar cut into Clarkson's lead with a power play goal with 3:06 remaining in the third. Ryan Bottrill and Jordan Tonelli assisted on Puskar's fifth of the season.
The Bears hit the road for the first time in a month to take on the Rensselaer Engineers on Friday (Feb. 10) and the Union Dutchmen on Saturday (Feb. 11). Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday with both games streaming on ESPN+.
