HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Brown women's lacrosse team opened their season with a 10-7 victory over Hofstra Tuesday afternoon in New York. The Bears used a 5-0 run late in the third quarter and into the fourth to seize control of the game and claim the victory.
"It was a good team effort for our first game," head coach Keely McDonald '00 said. "I Iiked how we improved in different parts of our game from quarter to quarter. We learned a lot about what we need to focus on for our next game."
It was an impressive season-opening win for the Bears, taking down a Hofstra team that was previously 2-0 and had defeated #25 Vanderbilt 11-8 last Saturday.
Mia Mascone led Brown with four points from three goals and one assist. Claire Jeschke, Annie Burton, and Julia Ford all scored twice, while Maddie Joyce had one goal and Abigail Ball recorded one assist.
In her first collegiate start, freshman goalie Claire Mahoney made 11 saves to pick up the team's first win of the season and the first of her career.
Jeschke got the Bears started with the first goal of the game, which was followed by strikes by Burton and Mascone to give Brown the early 3-0 lead. After the Pride got a couple back, the Bears led 4-2 at halftime.
Mascone opened the scoring in the second half, but Hofstra would then score four in a row to take the 6-5 lead, their only of the game.
Three minutes later, Ford tied the game for Brown and, with just 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Joyce gave the Bears back the lead.
Three more from Brown in the fourth made it 10-6 and even though Hofstra got one back late, it was too much to overcome.
The Bears won the draw control battle 11-10 and went 17-for-21 on clears compared to Hofstra's 15-for-19. Emmie Lau led Brown with four draw controls.
Brown will play its first home game of the season this Saturday, Feb. 25 when they welcome Albany to Stevenson-Pincince Field for a 12 p.m. matchup.
