PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball dropped its opening night contest against Florida Gulf Coast, 80-58 on Monday night. Two Bears finished the game in double-figures in the loss.
Grace Arnolie and Kyla Jones each scored a team-high 13 points. It was Arnolie's eighth-straight game in double-figures dating back to last season. Arnolie also led Brown with seven rebounds and four assists.
Alyssa Moreland added eight points and freshman Olivia Young scored six points in her first-career game.
Brown (0-1) finished the night shooting 40% from the floor but hit just 5-of-18 threes. Florida Gulf Coast (1-0) lived behind the arc, going 16-for-42 from three-point range.
The Bears scored the first three points of the game with a layup by Jones and free throw from Moreland. After another free throw by Ada Anamekwe pulled Brown within one at 8-7, FGCU went on an 8-0 run to jump ahead by nine and led by 11 at the end of the first.
A three by Isabella Mauricio and jumper by Arnolie pulled Brown to within one but the Eagles quickly pushed the lead to 17. A layup by Gianna Aiello right before the halftime buzzer made the score 44-30.
In the second half, the Bears tried to climb back into the game but FGCU had a response of any threat Brown tried to pose.
Florida Gulf Coast was led by Uju Ezeudu, who scored 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
