PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball was led by Grace Arnolie and Kyla Jones, each with 17 points but the Bears came up short against Holy Cross, 62-54 on Thursday night (Nov. 9).
Arnolie and Jones each reached double-figures for the second-straight game but no other Bear scored more than six points in the loss. Ada Anamekwe scored six points for the Bears but fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Gianna Aiello finished the night with a team-high seven rebounds, while Alyssa Moreland, Arnolie and Anamekwe had six points. Arnolie led Brown in assists again with three and Jones collected three steals for the second-straight contest.
Brown jumped out to a quick lead as Mauricio, Moreland and Arnolie each hit threes to put the Bears up 12-2. Jones added four points and another three by Arnolie put Brown up 19-8 after the first quarter.
The Bears were hot from the three-point line in the first, hitting four threes but only hit one more three the rest of the game, going 1-for-16 over the last 30 minutes.
The offense stalled for Brown in the second as Holy Cross climbed back into the game. Brown was held scoreless until a layup by Gianna Aiello with 4:08 left in the quarter made the score 21-16 Bears. Holy Cross pulled within one but another basket by Aiello kept the Bears in front.
Brown held a three-point lead after two free throws from Arnolie with just over a minute left in the half, but the Crusaders used a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead into the half after outscoring Brown 18-6 in the quarter.
Four points from Jones and a layup by Ada Anamekwe put Brown up 34-30 early in the third. Jones scored two more points, hitting free throws with 5:09 on the clock but the Bears went scoreless for the rest of the quarter as Holy Cross led 40-36 with 10 minutes left to play.
Holy Cross had an answer for any run Brown tried to put together in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders used two big threes after not hitting any in the first three quarters to keep Brown at bay and iced the game from the free throw line, hitting eight in the final quarter.
