Lesburt Jr. Career Day, Late Free Throws Propel Men’s Basketball to 93-83 Victory

NASSAU, The Bahamas – A career performance by Alexander Lesburt Jr. highlighted an overtime 93-83 Brown University (2-5) victory over Kansas City (2-4) on Saturday morning in the Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center.
With the win, the Bears will take on the winner of Middle Tennessee State and Ohio tomorrow in the finale of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship.
Lesburt Jr. finished with 20 points and went 4-of-7 from three-point range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line, along with six rebounds, one block and a steal. Kino Lilly Jr. went 8-of-12 for 27 points and drained nine from the charity stripe. Nana Owusu-Anane and Kalu Anya combined for 27 points as the Bears shot 58.5 percent from the field and 13-of-14 from the free throw line in overtime. Anya also added a career-high five steals.
MARTIN POSTGAME
"It wasn't easy, but we responded well and I'm excited for our team," said head coach Mike Martin '04. "We moved the basketball, hit free throws, took care of the basketball and adjusted to a physical and tough team in Kansas City. We can build on this."
ON AJ's PERFORMANCE
"AJ is a really talented player and he competed extremely well defensively on athletic wings," added Martin. "He's here for a reason and we're happy for him."
FIRST HALF
Brown came out firing, sparked by Lesburt Jr.'s play off the bench, and jumped out to a 21-8 lead with 12:35 remaining in the opening half. The Bears 14-2 run featured four steals by Kalu Anya, a career-high.
Kansas City got hot to end the half with a 38-36 edge over the Bears. Lesburt Jr. and Lilly Jr. posted eight points apiece and drained a combined four triples, Lilly Jr. and Malachi Ndur collected five total assists and Brown forced eight turnovers.
SECOND HALF
Roos led early, but Owusu-Anane's steal and dunk, followed by Cooley and-one (7:03) regained the lead for Brown 60-59.
Cooley hit free throws with 28 seconds remaining, but KC was able to force overtime after a deep three with 7.2 left.
OVERTIME
Brown began with nine unanswered points and dominated in all facets in the extra period to defeat the Roos in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
