CHICAGO – Brown women's basketball used a second-half surge to take down Loyola Chicago 56-49 on Wednesday (Nov. 22).
Kyla Jones showed out in her homecoming, leading Brown with 20 points and going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The Chicago, Ill., native scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half after getting into early four trouble.
Grace Arnolie was second on the team with 19 points hitting three of Brown's four threes. The Bears struggled from the floor, shooting just 30 percent from the floor and 16 percent from three-point range but the Bears made up for that going 18-for-24 (75 percent) from the free throw line.
The Bears owned the turnover battle, forcing 27 turnovers by the Ramblers and only committing 13. Brown turned those 27 turnovers into 15 points.
Both offenses started slowly with Loyola Chicago leading 3-2 at the media timeout halfway through the first. Mauricio hit a three to cut LUC's lead to 7-5 with four minutes left in the quarter but Brown was held scoreless the rest of the frame, trailing 14-5 after one quarter.
Brown's next points came with 7:02 on the clock in the third with a layup by Arnolie making it 20-7. The Bears cut the deficit to single digits with a 7-0 run that featured a three by Arnolie, and layups by both Grace Kirk and Arnolie. Anamekwe added a late free throw as the Bears trailed 27-15 at the break.
Brown's offense picked up and the defense locked down after the half as the Bears outscored the Ramblers 16-3 in the third quarter. After a three by LUC started the scoring in the second half with 7:54 on the clock, Brown did not allow a point in the rest of the quarter.
The Bears' 16-0 run began with layups by Jones and Anamekwe. Free throws by Moreland cut the lead to single digits and four-straight points by Jones made it a five-point game. Arnolie hit a driving layup and after an offensive foul, a layup by Anamekwe made it a one-point game. Free throws by Jones with 16 seconds left in the quarter gave Brown the lead heading to the fourth.
Brown continued the run to start the fourth, scoring the first four points of the frame with free throws and a layup from Jones to make it a 20-0 run. After a Loyola three, Arnolie responded to put the Bears back up five. LUC tied the game at 38 but Arnolie once again responded with a three and a free throw by Alyssa Moreland put Brown up four.
After Loyola cut Brown's lead to one, Moreland hit another free throw. On the Ramblers' next possession, Moreland pulled down a rebound and was fouled leading to free throws. A technical foul called on Loyola's head coach gave Brown two more free throws that were hit by Jones putting Brown up six with one minute to go.
Despite comeback efforts for Loyola, Brown went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last minute to ice the game.
