Jones Matches Career-High in Comeback Win Over Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Brown women's basketball completed its comeback against Monmouth, earning a 59-58 win on Sunday. Kyla Jones matched her career-high with 34 points in the win.
Jones finished the night going 15-for-23 from the floor, setting her career-high in made field goals. Ada Anamekwe scored a season-high 12 points and Alyssa Moreland had a season-high 11 points. Both players also had season-highs in rebounds with Moreland grabbing nine and Anamekwe pulling down seven.
After erasing a 16-point deficit in its last game against Loyola Chicago, the Bears found themselves down 17 in the third quarter against the Hawks.
The Bears used a heavy dose of inside offense as Brown scored 50 of its 59 points in the paint. The Bears also scored six free throws. Jones hit Brown's only three with 2:08 left in the game with Brown missing its first 17 threes.
Down eight heading into the fourth, Brown used an 8-0 run with six points from Jones and two from Anamekwe to pull within two. After a Monmouth basket, Jones went on a personal 7-0 run capped by the three to put Brown up four with just over two minutes to play. Monmouth scored four-straight points to take back the lead but Brown again went to Jones who scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, getting the layup to go to put Brown up one.
Brown's defense buckled down, forcing a turnover and two missed shots by Monmouth to close out the win.
Brown kept it close in the first quarter as Jones hit a driving layup to tie the game at eight with just under two minutes to play. The Bears went scoreless the last two minutes, and Monmouth took an 11-8 lead after one quarter of play.
Jones, Anamekwe and Moreland all scored as Brown cut Monmouth's lead to five. After the Hawks went up by nine, Jones responded with another drive for two. A 5-0 run put Brown down 14 as the Bears trailed 36-22 at the break.
Early in the third, Monmouth went up by as much as 17 but Brown continued to battle. Six-straight points by Anamekwe cut the lead to 11. The Bears continued to climb back in the game as Anamekwe scored again and was fouled. After missing the free throw, Moreland pulled down the rebound, made the layup and was also fouled. Moreland finished off the three-point play to pull Brown within eight.
Monmouth responded with a jumper but Moreland and Jones each scored, making it a six-point game. Jones hit a turnaround to cut Monmouth's lead to 46-41 but the Hawks hit a three right before time expired to make it an eight-point game heading to the fourth.

Brown will remain on the road for an Ocean State matchup with Bryant on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Smithfield.
