Field Hockey Captures 2-0 Road Win at Columbia
10/15/2023 2:47:00 PM | Field Hockey
NEW YORK – The Brown Bears (5-7, 1-4 Ivy League) tallied first and second half goals to take a 2-0 shutout win over the Columbia Lions (3-10, 0-5 Ivy League) Sunday afternoon in New York.
"Lindsey Ross was exceptional today in her leadership and steady play," said head coach Britt Broady. "Her calm yet demanding communication allowed our defensive unit to sustain periods of chaos. On the attacking end, our development and passing through the midfield allowed us to produce higher quality circle entries and shots on goal."
Brown and Columbia went scoreless in the opening quarter with the Lions holding a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Katie McCallum put the Bears ahead halfway through the second quarter with her third goal of the season. Imogen Govan found McCallum behind the defense with a pass and the senior beat Columbia goalie Katie Wimmer (4 saves) with a quick shot.
Lexi Pellegrino doubled Brown's lead halfway through the third quarter soon after a Columbia penalty corner. The sophomore netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Columbia had its 11th penalty corner of the afternoon down a pair of goals halfway through the fourth quarter, but Brown goalkeeper Kylee Del Monte (7 saves) turned aside Maya Walker's shot to keep the Lions off the board.
"We came into today with a lot of confidence in ourselves as a unit and I think that showed on the field," said senior captain Lindsey Ross. "I am really proud of everyone's performance today, it was truly a full team effort that allowed us to capitalize on our opportunities in the circle and walk away with a big win."
