10/20/2023 5:50:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a 10-9 edge in shots and equal penalty corners, the Brown Bears (5-8, 1-5 Ivy League) dropped a 1-0 final at home to the 17th-ranked Cornell Big Red (11-3, 5-1 Ivy League) Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Brown jumped out of the gates quickly and held a 4-0 edge in shots through a scoreless first quarter. Cornell goalkeeper Martha Broderick made the first of five saves in the frame.
Cornell standout Caroline Ramsey gave the Big Red the lead in the second quarter with her Ivy League-leading 21st goal of the season. The senior connected off a penalty corner with Claire Wolfe and Jenna Villeneuve picking up the assists.
Brown goalkeeper Ella Edmonds, making her first start of the season, made a big save on Ramsey in the final seconds of the second quarter. Cornell was then awarded a penalty stroke with 12 seconds remaining, and Edmonds stood tall again to turn aside Ramsey's effort.
Zoe Lawrence and Katie McCallum had scoring chances early in the third quarter as the Bears looked to tie the game, but Broderick turned aside both shots.
With five and a half minutes to go in the third, Lexi Pellegrino blasted a shot on goal, but Broderick again made the save.
Cornell held the Bruno attack at bay for much of the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout victory.
The Bears return to Goldberger Family Field on Sunday to host the Georgetown Hoyas (1-14, 0-6 Big East) on Senior Day. Sunday's game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
