Women's Rugby Falls in Close Match Against Dartmouth
10/29/2023 6:02:00 PM | Women's Rugby
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-3, 3-3 NIRA) held tight with the defending NIRA Champion Dartmouth Big Green (4-2, 3-1 NIRA), falling 22-10 in the regular season finale.
"Bruno showed such great improvement, we lost considerably to Dartmouth last year, 85-0, so to see our growth in just a year's time is so incredible," said Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "The team was so brave and played a full 80-minute match that was physical and the kicking game was exceptional.
"Julia Murray and Morgan Cunningham were excellent in the backfield. Akilah Cathey was a dominant force on attack. Seniors Noelle Lewis and Ashley Amparo were stalwart on the wings. I'm just so very excited to see this team continue to improve and continue to demonstrate that we are a strong and competitive side."
Dartmouth scored early and late in the first half to take a 10-0 lead in rainy and cold conditions at Berylson Family Fields.
Cathey cut into Dartmouth's lead late in the half to make it 10-5 with her first try of the afternoon.
The Big Green extended the lead early in the second half with a try and conversion to make it 17-5.
Minutes later, Cathey touched down for her second try of the game to make it 17-10 in favor of the Big Green.
The visitors added a final try to push the score to 22-10.
