Ricky Cabanillas Highlights F&M Open with Victory at 149 Pounds
1/6/2023 7:14:00 PM | Wrestling
LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Ricky Cabanillas ran the table on Friday to win the championship at the David H. Lehman F&M Open at 149 pounds. It was the second title in his career at the tournament, as he repeated his performance from the 2019-20 season.
Cabanillas started with back-to-back major decisions, then took a 5-2 decision and followed that with a pin in 6:35 to advance to the semifinal. The Whippany, N.J. native took a 4-3 decision in the semis before capturing a 7-2 decision in the championship.
"I took it one match at a time," Cabanillas said. "I tried to learn from the previous matches and tighten my technique down. Had a tough one in the quarterfinal and semifinal. When it came to the final it was all about who wanted it most. Turns out I did, and I pushed the pace and he broke. Overall, it was a great day and I loved the support from my teammates, coaches, and family!"
Sophomore Sam McMonagle won four matches on the day at 157 pounds, including a pin and a major decision, to advance to the second consolation round of eight. Classmates Mason Spears and Harrison Trahan had solid days as well at 165 pounds, Spears advanced to the second consolation round of eight, while Trahan moved to the first consolation round of eight.
Freshman Alex Semenenko (285 lbs.) won three matches, while freshman Jared Brunner (Unattached - 125 lbs.) and sophomores Blake Saito (149 lbs.) and Keegan Rothrock (157 lbs.) each won two matches on the day.
As a team, the Bears finished 12th overall with 58.5 points.
