PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Brown baseball alum and one of the best players to ever come out of Rhode Island will receive a major honor next month. Bill Almon '75 will be one of 10 inductees to the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2023. The group is set to be inducted on Friday, February 3 at the College Baseball Hall of Fame Foundation's Night of Champions event in Omaha, Nebraska.
Among the best players in Brown baseball history, Almon was drafted first overall in the 1974 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. To this day, he remains the only Ivy League student-athlete in history to be the first overall selection in one of the four major sports' drafts.
A Warwick, R.I. native and graduate of Warwick Vets High School, Almon played 15 seasons in the majors with the Padres, Pirates, Mets, A's, White Sox, Expos and Phillies from 1974-1988. Coming out of high school as an infielder, he had offers from all but two major league teams and passed up a $50,000 bonus from San Diego to enroll at Brown. He batted .536 in 41 at bats as a freshman in 1972, before hitting .352 as a sophomore. As a junior in 1974, he was named the College Baseball Player of the Year after batting .350 with 10 homers, 31 runs scored and 20 steals in 21 attempts.
