PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball hung tough but a run in the third quarter doomed the Bears against Princeton in a 67-54 loss on Saturday (Jan. 14).
Brown was led by 11 points from Charlotte Jewell, who only played 21 minutes before leaving the game due to injury. Jewell was 4-for-7 from the field with four rebounds.
Grace Arnolie finished the game with 10 points and Alyssa Moreland scored a career-high 10 points and led the Bears with eight rebounds.
Lexi Love had a season-high seven points off the bench and Ada Anamekwe added six points, three rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Brown and Princeton both shot 42 percent from the field but the Bears struggled from the free throw line, hitting just 6-for-13, while the Tigers went 12-for-14.
The game started well for the Bears with Brown taking an early lead off two threes by Jewell but the Tigers came back to take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter.
Down 29-17 late in the second, Brown pulled back into the game beginning with a free throw by Anamekwe. A layup by Jewell with just over a minute left made the score 29-20. A steal by Maddie Mullin led to a layup by Arnolie and a three-point play by Anamekwe capped an 8-0 run as the Bears trailed 29-25 at the half.
Moreland hit a layup and Mauricio's three 50 seconds into the third quarter put Brown up 30-29. Arnolie hit a jumper and Mauricio hit another three as Brown pushed its lead to 35-33. Brown matched another Princeton basket with a jumper from Arnolie but the Tigers used a 9-0 run to go up 44-37 before Moreland hit a three. That would be the last basket for the Bears in the quarter as Princeton closed the third on an 8-0 run to go up 52-40.
A 13-4 run by the Tigers to start the fourth quarter made put any comeback for the Bears out of reach.
