Men's water polo goes 2-1 on first day of Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's water polo picked up two wins to start play at the Bruno Classic on Saturday (Sept. 3). The Bears beat Austin College 17-7 and Gannon 18-9. The lone loss was a tight 13-12 defeat to California Baptist.
On the day, Connor Enright, Leo Berkam and Gabe Chang led the Bears with eight goals apiece. Ilias Stothart finished the day with six goals and was strong presence for the Bears drawing eight ejections and seven penalties in his first collegiate games.
In goal, Simeon Dong finished the day 12 saves in six quarters of play and freshman Kole Newman had 14 in six quarters in goal.
"It was nice to pick up a couple of wins and while we lost a tough one to California Baptist, I was able to see areas we can and will improve," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "Tomorrow will be a tough one but we will be ready to compete and get better."
BROWN 17, AUSTIN COLLEGE 7
The Bears jumped ahead early winning the first quarter 5-3 over Austin. Daniel Hadar led the Bears with two goals in the quarter, while Cole Atwell, Gabe Chang and Leo Berkman each scored once in the first eight minutes.
Brown opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run, picking up goals from Ilias Stothart, Connor Enright, Chang and Filip Aleksic. Austin would break the run, scoring just before the two-minute mark but Roberto Serrano scored a few seconds later and Max Boucher added a goal with just over a minute remaining in the half.
Matt Simko and Atwell scored early in the second half, putting Brown up 13-5. Austin College scored its only goal of the third quarter with 3:31 on the clock but 25 seconds later, Chang got the goal right back.
Anderson Todd scored 40 seconds into the fourth quarter and Berkman added two goals to give the Bears the win.
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST 13, BROWN 12
Brown fell behind early in a tough loss to California Baptist. Enright scored five goals for the Bears but Brown could not complete the comeback against the Lancers.
Enright scored 30 seconds into the game but CBU scored four goals over the next 3:30 to take control. Chang ended the run with a goal but two goals in the last 2:40 for the Lancers put Brown down 6-2 after one quarter.
CBU began the second quarter with a goal. Stothart and Berkman responded with goals less than 30 seconds apart to cut into the lead making it 7-4 at halftime.
Brown allowed four goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter, with the Bears only tally during that time coming from Enright. Simko added two goals late in the quarter to bring the Bears back into striking distance before the final eight minutes.
Enright and Berkman scored early in the quarter before CBU got a goal back halfway though the quarter. Another goal by Enright made the score 12-10 but the Lancers got another goal 20 seconds later. Stothart netted another goal and Enright found the net with 1:15 left to make it a one-goal game but Brown could not get the tying goal.
BROWN 18, GANNON 9
Brown held a one-goal lead after the first quarter, getting goals from Berkman, Maxwell Patterson and Aleksic in the first eight minutes.
The Bears took control of the game in the second, outscoring Gannon 6-3. Patterson added his second goal to start the quarter. After a goal from Gannon, Stothart, Aleksic and Nick Berry all found the net. Chang and Enright also found the back of the net late in the quarter to push the lead to 9-4.
Stothart started the second half with back-to-back goals and Evan Moore and Anderson Todd capped off a 4-0 run.
Brown scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter coming from Atwell, Berkman and Serrano. Later in the quarter, Todd and Boucher each added a goal for the final tally.
UP NEXT
Brown will play two matches on Saturday, taking on #4 Stanford at 8:15 a.m. and will finish the day against Air Force at 2:30 p.m.
