Field Hockey Begins Broady Era with Double Overtime Victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown field hockey (1-0) began the 2022 campaign with a 4-3 double-overtime victory over Saint Francis (0-3) on Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.

"Coming out to this amazing environment with our fans and support was great," said head coach Britt Broady. "This team performed well and through adversity and I was pleased with our maturity and willingness to continue to attack."

Lindsey Ross, Emma Rothkopf, Lexi Pellegrino and Catie Summers all found the back of the net for the Bears, while Mikayla Walsh, Lucy Adams and Ross all added assists.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Pellegrino made it 1-0 Brown for the first goal of the season for the Bears, who carried the one-goal lead into halftime. Rothkopf followed with a goal of her own to make it 2-0 Bears early in the third quarter before the Red Flash found the net for their first of the contest moments later.

Ross collected a penalty stroke goal in the fourth, but Saint Francis scored twice in a span of 89 seconds with less than two minutes to play in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. After threatening throughout the first overtime, the Bears scored the golden goal early in the second overtime in the 72nd minute when Summers scored off a rebound to send Brown home with a season-opening win for the fourth consecutive season.
