Govan Nets Game-Winner as Bears Rally Past No. 24 Miami in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – An overtime game-winner from junior Imogen Govan gave the Brown field hockey team a big come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over No. 24 Miami of Ohio on Sunday at Goldberger Family Field.
The victory gives the Bears a 2-0 start for the second straight season, and their first win over a ranked opponent since October 13, 2013 when the Bears took down No. 14 Louisville 2-1 in overtime.
Govan had a part in all three Brown goals, totaling five points on the day with two goals and one assist, including scoring the game-tying goal with under four minutes to play in regulation, and the overtime winner. Sophomore Mikayla Walsh also scored for the Bears while sophomore Chloe Sik and freshman Lexi Pellegrino each added assists.
"Miami is a very well coached team with some really exceptional players, and we knew today was going to be an uphill battle," head coach Britt Broady said. "For us to come out here and focus in on ourselves and play to our strengths was what allowed us to win at the end of the day."
Brown jumped in front late in the first quarter when Walsh took a pass from Govan and found the back of the net with 11 seconds remaining for the early 1-0 lead.
Miami (2-2) drew even in the 22nd minute to knot the score 1-1 and carried the tie into halftime. The RedHawks outshot Brown 11-3 in the opening half, and took the lead with a goal in the opening seconds of the third quarter.
The Bears clawed back in the fourth quarter, outshooting Miami 8-5 in the second half, and went on a two-man advantage with 5:44 remaining in regulation. Brown capitalized following a penalty corner when Sik let off a shot from the top of the arc that was tipped past the goaltender by Govan to tie the score.
Brown fought off three penalty corners in the final three minutes to preserve the tie and force overtime. In the extra stanza, once again on the man-advantage, Brown came through with the winner in the 66th minute when Pellegrino carried the ball in on a breakaway, and fed a pass across to the left to Govan who redirected it past the goaltender and in to give Brown its second straight overtime victory to start the season.
"We're super excited and we're just going to go one game at a time," Broady said. "We'll work to get better every single game and every single practice, and if we continue on that trajectory, we're going to be really happy with our success throughout the season."
The Bears return to action and will continue their four-match home stand to start the year on Friday afternoon, September 9 against in-state foe Bryant at 3 p.m.
