PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lexi Pellegrino made it 3-1 Brown in the final seconds of the third quarter as the Bears captured a non-conference win over the Northeastern Huskies Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Brown improves to 4-0 in the 2022 season, marking the best start to a season since 1999.
"Northeastern is a very good team and they had us on the ropes in the final quarter of the game," said head coach Britt Broady. "They attacked really, really hard and we've been working on our defensive organization and they had us on the ropes and allowed us to continue to practice. I'm really proud that we didn't give up a goal, fought through adversity, and just found a way."
Stacey Lukasheva tallied her second goal in as many games halfway through the opening quarter to put the Bears ahead early. Once again, Brown's penalty corner offense led to the goal with Mikayla Walsh and Lindsey Ross picking up assists on the goal.
Northeastern's Emmy Stubbs beat Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine (7 saves) early in the second quarter to even the score at 1-1. The counter-attack goal was set-up by Kate Blaisdell.
The Bears re-claimed the lead minutes later as Walsh forced a Northeastern turnover and centered the ball to Katie McCallum, who redirected the pass through Northeastern goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy (4 saves) for her first goal of the season.
After a scoreless 14:30 to begin the third quarter, Brown struck on a penalty corner as Pellegrino found the insurance marker with her second goal in as many games and third of the season. Emma Rothkopf and Ross assisted on the goal.
The Huskies pressed offensively in the fourth quarter and fired eight shots on goal in the final 15 minutes. Brine stood tall to make six saves and Celia Donner recorded the team's first defensive save of the season in the final minutes to preserve the two-goal lead.
"Our goal has been to get better with every practice and every game, and we've been doing that," Broady added. "Now we're looking ahead to Tuesday's practice and preparing for Towson. I'm excited to get on the road with this group and have a little fun with them as well."
Brown hits the road for the first time under Broady for a pair of games in Maryland next weekend. The Bears take on Towson on Friday (Sept. 16) before squaring off against VCU in a neutral site game at Towson on Sunday (Sept. 18).
Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. with Sunday's game scheduled for noon.
