Brown Places Third at Two Meets to Conclude Weekend of XC Races

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Brown women's cross country team took third place in two meets on Saturday morning, finishing third of 10 teams at the Nassaney Invitational at Bryant, and third out of five teams at the Maribel Sanchez Souther Invitational at Dartmouth.
The pair of Saturday meets concludes two days of competition for the programs, after the men's team competed on Friday at Providence College's Friar Invitational.
At Bryant, Brown's women finished in third place overall with 74 points, finishing just behind the host Bulldogs, and URI. A total of 10 teams competed at the 5K meet, including eight Division I schools. Senior Lily Harding led the way by finishing fourth overall in 18:49.8, junior Stephanie Kriss (19:13.4) followed in eighth place and senior Grace Dorantes (19:23.9) placed 12th overall. Junior Katie Orchard (19:26.6) placed 15th overall with senior Sarah Reichheld (20:12.3) finishing 38th to complete the team's top five. In her collegiate debut, freshman Julia Schriefer completed Brown's field of six finishers in 57th overall in 20:44.0.
Up in Hanover at Dartmouth, the Bears took third place out of five teams in the 6K, with sophomore Isolde McManus taking fifth place overall out of 74 finishers in 22:42.4. Senior Emma Madgic (23:24.7) and sophomore Maxine Montoya (23:27.2) finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th places, respectively. Freshman Juli Gonzalez (23:40.8) finished 21st overall, with junior Isa Stronski (23:43.5) finishing 24th to complete the team's top five. Freshman Julia Antony (23:45.5) finished 26th while senior Emily Moini (23:49.7) finished 28th to complete Brown's top seven.
On Friday, the Brown men sent a team of six runners to the Friar Invitational, an 8K hosted by Providence College at Coogan XC Course in Attleboro, Mass. The Bears placed fifth in the six-team field with junior Evan Sherman leading the Bears' pack for the second straight meet in 14th place with a time of 25:26.5. Sophomore Justin Hickey was the next runner to finish overall in 25:35.6. Sophomore Sam Colton finished 18th overall in 25:47.3, followed by Jason Markopoulos (29th/26:33.1) and Gabriel Cannavo (28:00.4) to round out Brown's finishers.
The Bears will have a weekend off before both teams return to action on September 23 at Franklin Park in Boston for the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.
