Men's Crew Finishes Fourth as a Team; Varsity 8 Takes Bronze at 2022 IRA Championship
6/5/2022 3:16:00 PM | Men's Crew
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Brown Bears finished fourth as a team at the 2022 IRA Championship, headlined by the Varsity 8's bronze medal on the final day of racing Sunday on Mercer Lake.
The bronze medal marked the first by the Bruno varsity crew since 2014. Brown's fourth-place team finish marks the highest since finishing in the same position in 2015.
"Today's races were a testament to this teams' resiliency and strength; this group has great team spirit and has just been really exciting to be around," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Assistant Coaches Rufus Biggs and Scott Cockle have really made a difference in the formation of the crews and daily practices. I'm impressed by how hard each person on the squad worked and I know they are all a factor in today's performance.
"Even today, after a mishap in the Third Varsity race, the team was so determined to show what they are made of. The Second Varsity raced really hard and helped us to a fourth-place finish overall."
The 3V8 boat opened the final day of the Championship with a sixth-place finish in the Grand Final. Yale and Washington were neck-and-neck through the first half of the race before the Bulldogs pulled away to post a time of 5:54.717 for the victory. Harvard passed Washington in the final stretch to take silver with a time of 5:57.717.
The Bears clocked a time of 6:15.457 despite a broken oar hindering the crew. The finish secured 57 team points for the James Ten Eyck Team Standings.
The JV boat raced alongside the rest of the Grand Finals boats in the first 500 meters before Yale and Dartmouth separated slightly in the second leg of the race. The Bulldogs never relinquished the lead, posting a time of 5:51.958 for the title.
The Cal Golden Bears charged past Brown, Washington, and Dartmouth in the second half of the race to take the silver with the Big Green holding off Washington for bronze. Brown clocked a time of 6:01.430 for fifth, finishing inside a boat-length of Washington.
The Bears picked up 80 team points with the fifth-place finish in the 2V8 Grand Final.
The Varsity 8 boat closed out the 2022 IRA Championship in the Grand Final with all six crews racing side-by-side through the first 500 meters. Cal separated from the pack with Yale in the second leg and the Golden Bears set the pace for the rest of the race with a time of 5:44.239 for the title.
Brown dueled Washington in the second and third legs of the race and eventually broke free form the Huskies to sit in third. The Bears pushed to catch the Yale crew in second, but finished with a time of 5:49.133 for the bronze medal.
"The Varsity made a good adjustment from the semifinal," Cooke commented. "In the grand final they didn't press too hard too early and they were able put down a really strong base pace. They rowed with a lot of determination and they earned their medals. It was an extremely competitive field and I'm really happy for the crew and for the whole team. It was a big effort by everyone involved."
With 110 team points added from the third-place V8 finish, Brown accumulated 247 team points to finish fourth overall. Yale won the team National Championship with 283 points with Cal (272) and Washington (255) rounding out the top-three.
