PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's crew tallied 18 IRCA Scholar-Athletes, the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced earlier Monday.
One senior, six juniors, and 11 sophomores comprise the Bruno honorees as IRCA Scholar-Athletes, joining 507 student-athletes from 43 other rowing programs on the list.
With 18 selections, Brown is tied with MIT for fourth-most from a heavyweight program. Harvard led the nation with 23 selections with Williams (22) and Stanford (19) rounding out the top-three. The Bears were one of 19 heavyweight programs with 10 or more selections.
A student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher academically and maintain a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA through the Fall 2021 semester. Additionally, the student-athlete must compete at the 2022 IRA Championship or on a team's top-three boats during the regular season to be eligible.
Adrian Johansen and Mathijs Deetman both earned Scholar-Athlete recognition in the inaugural year in 2021.
Ryan Williams is Brown's lone senior honoree. The Wakefield, Massachusetts native coxed the 2V8 crew for the majority of the spring season and to a fifth-place finish at the 2022 IRA Championship.
Harry Church, Simon Hatcher, and Kai Hoite mark the three Brown juniors who captured bronze at the IRA Championship with the Varsity 8 crew. Church and Hoite rowed in the top boat for the entire spring season while Hatcher made the jump from the 2V8 to V8 crew before the Eastern Sprints and IRA Championship.
Mathijs Deetman, Adrian Johansen, and George Lawton round out the Class of 2023 Scholar-Athlete honorees. Deetman rowed with the Varsity 4 crew at the IRA Championship, helping the crew take 10th overall.
Johansen and Lawton both rowed in the 3V8 crew at the IRA Championship, qualifying for the Grand Final and finishing sixth overall.
Jack DiGiovanni, Charlie Fargo, and Gabriel Mahler helped the V8 crew take third at the IRA Championship and mark three of Brown's 11 sophomore Scholar-Athletes.
Four Bears from the Second Varsity 8 boat at the national championship earned Scholar-Athlete recognition: Ian Burnett, Josh Golbus, Willem Stoop, and Nathan Swidler.
Connor Brown, Charlie Lucas, and Matthew Rose helped the 3V8 crew finish sixth and each earn Scholar-Athlete recognition in their first eligible season. Matthew Boranian rounds out the Scholar-Athlete honorees after helping the V4 crew take 10th on Mercer Lake.
