PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following the program's second-place finish at the 75th Eastern Sprints in mid-May, men's crew Head Coach Paul Cooke '89 was voted EARC Heavyweight Coach of the Year for the first time since 2012, announced by the Eastern Association of Rowing Coaches earlier Tuesday.
"It is quite an honor to receive this EARC Coach of the Year Award," said Cooke. "I know how hard every team, coach and student-athlete works and strives for success in this league. I feel lucky and I really appreciate and thank all the EARC Coaches for their recognition. This award is a reflection of a lot of support by alumni and parents and by a job well-done by our coaching staff, Assistant Coaches Rufus Biggs and Scott Cockle, and, most importantly, by this team of motivated student-athletes."
Brown was stellar at the Sprints with three second-place finishes (V8, 2V8, 3V8) and a third-place finish (4V8) to finish second to Yale in the Rowe Cup team standings. In the Varsity 8 race, Brown edged out Dartmouth and Harvard and finished just over one second behind the Bulldogs in first.
The Bears maintained the momentum from Sprints through the 119th IRA Championship in early June, taking fourth in the James Ten Eyck Team Standings and bronze in the Varsity 8 Grand Final.
Brown's fourth-place team finish marks the 11th top-five finish and 17th top-10 finish for the program since 2002. The Varsity 8 finish marked the fifth medal under Cooke dating back to the 2002 season. The V8 crew has finished in the top-five at the IRA Championship 10 times under Cooke.
Brown's 2V8 and 3V8 crews took fifth and sixth overall, respectively, in their Grand Finals at the IRA Championship on Lake Mercer. The V4 crew finished tenth overall. The Second Varsity 8 finish marked the seventh top-five finish under Cooke.
