#5 Men's Lacrosse Falls to #13 Penn in Ivy League Tournament Semifinal
5/7/2022 12:10:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The top-seeded Brown Bears (10-5, 4-2 Ivy League) were unable to recreate the Philly magic Friday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field, falling behind 6-0 to the Penn Quakers in the opening quarter and ultimately suffering a 14-9 loss in the Ivy League Tournament semifinal.
The Quakers will square off against the Yale Bulldogs in Sunday's Championship game. Yale took a 14-11 win over Cornell in the first semifinal on College Hill.
"Credit to Penn, I thought they created a lot of good luck for themselves, they created a lot of plays and in a lacrosse game there's a certain amount of plays and they made more of them," said head coach Mike Daly. "I'm proud of our team, they never quit and kept grinding. The Penn goalie played great and Penn played a great game, our hats are off to them."
Penn jumped to the early lead for the second straight time against Brown and poured in six unanswered in the first 15 minutes. Dylan Gergar scored three in the first frame with Sam Handley adding a pair.
Brown responded in the second quarter as Ryan Aughavin and Devon McLane struck in the opening minutes to cut into Penn's lead. After 10 minutes of scoreless play, Jack Kelly made it 6-3 with 3:07 remaining in the first half.
Griffin King tallied his 12th goal of the season with 16 seconds to play in the half and Trevor Yeboah-Kodie tallied his seventh of the season just six seconds later to make it a one-goal game heading to the second half.
After Gergar and Brian Antonelli traded goals to start the third quarter, Penn scored four straight goals, including two EMO tallies, to make it an 11-6 game.
McLane scored his 11th man-up goal of the season to close the third quarter and completed the hat trick in the first minute of the fourth to bring the Bears back within three.
Nine seconds after McLane's tally, Handley pushed Penn's lead back to four and goals from Tynan Walsh and Ben Smith made it 14-8 Quakers with 11:20 remaining.
Patrick Burkinshaw, who was stellar all game, stood tall in the fourth quarter to make eight saves in the frame and finish the game with 20 in total. Connor Theriault recorded nine saves on the other end of the field.
Aughavin recorded his 28th goal of the season with 3:42 remaining in the contest.
Brown awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 8 to see if the 2022 season will continue. Sunday's Selection Show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.
