BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Erin McMeniman is headed to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Oregon after breaking the Brown program record in the javelin at the NCAA East Prelims on Thursday, highlighting three days of competition for the Bears.
For the third time this year, McMeniman reset the school record in the javelin, becoming the first woman in program history to top the 50-meter mark in the event, throwing 51.22 meters (168'0), a full 1.60 meters past her previous personal-best and school record, which she set at the Ivy League Championships earlier this month. She finished seventh overall in the event, with the top 12 qualifying for nationals.
It is the latest in a season full of accolades for the Dracut, Massachusetts native, who earned Second Team All-Ivy after a runner-up finish at Ivy League Heps. McMeniman's seventh place finish on Thursday was one spot ahead of Ivy champ Kate Joyce from Princeton, who will join McMeniman in Oregon.
Brown started its competition on Wednesday, with senior thrower Kegan Schroeter finishing 15th overall in the hammer throw at 66.30 meters (217'6).
Senior Joe Grula competed in the javelin on Wednesday afternoon, placing 32nd overall at 62.91 meters (206'4), seven spots ahead of his prelim ranking.
Junior Altan Mitchell also competed Wednesday afternoon in the first of his two events, where he placed 28th in the long jump at 7.25 meters (23'9.5), one place ahead of his prelim rank. Mitchell continued his competition on Friday when he placed 35th in the triple jump (15.15m/49'8.5).
Senior Bretram Rogers competed in the first round of the 100m hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.09 seconds to finish 36th.
Sophomore John McNeil represented Brown in the high jump and cleared 2.00 meters (6'6.75) to finish 33rd.
McMeniman will take center stage for the javelin at Hayward Field in Eugene on Thursday, June 9 at 6:45 p.m. Pacific Time (9:45 pm ET). Events for that evening will be broadcast live on ESPNU starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.
