PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Head Coach Paul Cooke '89 was named Ivy League Heavyweight Coach of the Year after guiding the Bears to a second-place finish at the 75th Eastern Sprints Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Ivy League announced the major award winners and All-Ivy teams early Thursday afternoon.
In addition to Cooke earning Coach of the Year honors, Brown's Varsity 8 crew earned Second Team All-Ivy honors for finishing second at the Sprints. Lastly, junior Simon Hatcher was named Academic All-Ivy for his efforts on the water and in the classroom.
The 2022 Bears have been ranked inside the top-10 all season and entered Sunday's Eastern Sprints as the sixth-ranked team in the nation and fifth-ranked team in the Eastern region.
Brown qualified for the Grand Finals in all five races at the Eastern Sprints, and posted three second-place finishes and a third-place finish to finish second as a team. The Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 all finished second behind top-ranked Yale and the 4V8 crew took third.
In each of the top-3 races, Brown edged out Ivy rivals Dartmouth and Harvard after falling to both in dual races earlier this spring.
With the second-place finish on Sunday, Bruno's V8 crew all earn Second Team All-Ivy honors. It marks the first Ivy recognition for the Bears since finishing second in 2013 and 2014.
