PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Brown standout Sam Lafferty '18 is set to compete in the 2022 IIHF Hockey World Championship at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland.
The 2022 Championship runs from Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 29 with 16 nations competing for the Gold Medal. The United States will play seven group games from May 13-24 before the medal rounds begin.
Lafferty is the first Bear to don the Red, White, and Blue since Bill Gilligan '77 represented the US at the 1983 IIHF World Championships. The Americans won the Group B Championship for promotion to the top group in the 1984 Worlds.
The 2022 United States roster features 24 players split between 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and three goaltenders. Lafferty is one of 17 players with NCAA experience on the US roster.
Michigan leads NCAA programs with four former Wolverines on the roster (Nick Blankenburg, Thomas Bordeleau, Luke Hughes, Strauss Mann) while Minnesota has three former Golden Gophers (Vinni Lettieri, Ben Meyers, Nate Schmidt) in the Red, White, and Blue. Northeastern is the only other college program with multiple players on the roster (Adam Gaudette, Jordan Harris).
There are eight programs with one representative: Brown, Harvard (Sean Farell), Miami-Ohio (Riley Barber), Minnesota-Duluth (Karson Kuhlman), Nebraska-Omaha (Jaycob Megna), Notre Dame (Andrew Peeke), Providence (Jon Gillies), and Yale (John Hayden).
Six players on the US roster played the majority of the 2021-22 season in the NCAA. Lafferty is one of the older players on the roster with just seven Americans born before 1995 on the roster.
Lafferty is one of nine Americans making their debut in an IIHF World Championship, joining Blankenburg, Bordeleau, Gaudette, Hughes, Kuhlman, Megna, Lettieri and Schmidt.
The Americans are coached by Cranston, Rhode Island native David Quinn, who served as bench boss for the US at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato, former Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill, Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings, and Ottawa Senators video coach Mike King will serve on Quinn's staff.
The 2018 Brown graduate began his third season with the Pittsburgh Penguins to start the 2021-22 season and played 10 games with the squad with a pair of assists. On January 5, 2022, Lafferty was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks with Alex Nylander returning to Pittsburgh.
Lafferty played 45 games with the Original 6 squad, posting five goals and six assists for 11 points. He tallied the game-winner in Chicago's 6-3 win over Ottawa in mid-March.
In late April, Lafferty signed a two-year extension with Chicago with an AAV of $1.150 million that locks him up through the 2023-24 season.
The US will square off against the seven other Group B nations in the Preliminary Round in Tampere. The Group A nations will play their respective preliminary rounds at Helsinki Ice Hall in Helsinki. The top-four teams from each Group advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 26.
The US has picked up the bronze medal in four of the last eight World Championships (2013, 2015, 2018, 2021).
