INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior Ryan Marra went 3-for-4 at the plate with a key two-run double as part of a five-run seventh inning.
- Junior Ray Sass delivered a two-run single and also scored a run in the seventh inning rally.
- Junior Derian Morphew also tagged an RBI single in the seventh inning.
- Jackson Hipp and Charles Crawford both reached base three times, with Crawford tallying two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
- On the mound, freshman Santhosh Gottam earned his second win of the year, tossing 3.2 innings of relief.
- Freshman Jack Seppings struck out four in 2.0 scoreless innings to lock down his first career save.
- The Bears put runners on base in each of the first seven innings, but had five runners erased on the basepaths and struck out 18 times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brown grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the second with some aggressive baserunning, with Crawford racing home from third with two outs while Hipp stayed in a rundown between first and second.
- The Crimson tied it up in the bottom of the inning following two hits and a wild pitch, then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when a relay throw home skipped to the backstop.
- Brown answered right back to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Crawford drove a two-out double in to the alley in right center to plate Nathan Brasher, who had reached on a walk.
- The game remained tied into the seventh inning when Sass stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and delivered a two-run single to left field to put the Bears in front for good.
- Next up, Marra worked the count full before lacing a liner to the left center field wall to plate Sass and Hipp with two more crucial runs to extend the lead to 6-2.
- Morphew followed with a two-strike RBI single of his own to plate Marra and push the lead to 7-2.
- The Crimson got three of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh on five hits against a pair of Brown relievers, with Brasher bailing Brown out of the inning by throwing out a runner at third base to end the rally.
- Seppings came on and struck out the side in the eighth inning, working around a two-out double. He returned for the ninth and worked around a leadoff double to lock down the save via a pop out, soft line out and strikeout.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "We had some really good at bats in that seventh inning. Not to be overlooked was the baserunning by Crawford at second base following that line drive. That could have easily been a double play to end the inning, but good baserunning gave us a shot to have another good at bat. It was a constant chain of guys picking each other up."
- "Jack (Seppings) has grown a lot this year already and I think he attacked every hitter. Without letting the hits get to him, he continued to deliver his best pitches and I'm proud of how he continued to deliver at the end of the game against a good offense."
- "The goal is always to win as many as you can, but to avoid a sweep on the road gives you a fighting chance moving forward. You want to take care of business every step of the way and this gives us momentum heading into next week."
