PHILADELPHIA, Pa. β Tobey McDonough and Paxton Meyers turned in sensational performances on the mound for the Brown baseball team in game two, but an unearned run in the bottom of the 13th inning of game two gave Penn a 2-1 walk-off win to sweep the Saturday doubleheader from Brown.
Β
The Quakers used a five-run third inning and held on for a 5-2 win in game one. The wins keep Penn just a half game out of first place in the Ivy standings.
Β
McDonough was in midseason form with 7.0 strong innings of work in game two, allowing just one run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Meyers came on in relief and kept Penn's bats quiet, tossing a career-long 5.2 innings, allowing just the one unearned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Β
McDonough's performance lowered his season ERA to 3.10, the second-lowest mark in the Ivy League. Catcher Jacob Burley caught another runner stealing in game two, giving him 13 for the season, the most in the Ivy.
Overall in the doubleheader, Brown relievers allowed zero earned runs over 9.2 innings of relief.
Β
In game one, Charlie Beilenson tied his season and career-high with four shutout innings while allowing just three hits in relief.
Β
Ray Sass had four hits including a pair of doubles and a run scored in game one for his first career-four hit game. Freshman Jared Johnson had two hits in each game, including a triple in the opener.

GAME ONE
- After Johnson was stranded following a leadoff triple in the second, Brown broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to grab the lead. Ryan Marra knocked a one-out single to right field to score Derian Morphew, and Reece Rappoli followed with a sac fly.
- Penn scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning, putting the first six runners on base, which included five hits and a leadoff solo homer to start the inning to supply all the offense they needed.
GAME TWO
- The two teams combined to go 7-for-38 with runners in scoring position and 26 strikeouts in game two.
- Penn grabbed a run in the second inning off a single and double with one out to take a 1-0 lead.
- McDonough settled in and retired 14 of the next 15 hitters after giving up his only run, and allowed just two hits over his final five innings.
- After getting no hits through the first six innings, Brown tied it in the seventh, starting with a leadoff single by Rappoli. With men at the corners and one down, Gunner Boree dropped down a perfectly executed bunt on a safety squeeze and beat it out for a single, with Marra scoring the tying run from third.
- In the ninth, Rappoli singled again leading off, but was later thrown out on a close play at home on a double by Johnson.
- Meyers appeared to have gotten through the eighth inning with a ground out, but the play was called back due to a balk. After a hit batsman, he ended the inning with a big strikeout to strand the go-ahead runner on third. He once again stranded the winning run on third in the ninth thanks to two diving plays by his infielders and a fly ball.
- Brown loaded the bases with nobody out in the 10th inning, but was unable to push a run across. Brown also threatened by getting runner into scoring position in the 11th, and loading the bases with one out in the 13th, but came up empty each time.
- Penn had two runners on with two outs in the 13th and delivered the heartbreaker by scoring the winning run on a dropped fly fall in deep right center field.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "It's tough. Tobey did a really great job keeping their hitters off balance and uncomfortable, and then he passed the torch to Paxton. All along, their pitchers were matching our guys pitch for pitch, and Paxton came in and just threw high leverage pitches inning after inning, with runners in scoring position, working around calls and their hitters that are leading the league. You can't say enough about how proud I am."
