NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Brown women's lacrosse team fell to Yale 15-13 Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 in Ivy League play, while the Bears dropped to 2-1.
A big second quarter was the difference that Yale needed as the Bulldogs outscored Brown 8-1 in the second frame. During the other three quarters combined, the Bears held a 12-7 advantage.
Mia Mascone led Brown with her second straight five-goal performance and added one assist. Maggie Fowler found the back of the net three times, while Leah Caputo did so twice. Claire Jeschke had one goal and one assist and Sophia DeRosa scored once as did Julia Ford, a career-first for the sophomore. Erin Tucker made 12 saves in goal for the Bears.
Brown started out the game on fire, quickly scoring the contest's first four goals thanks to five straight draw controls. Mascone scored the first two, followed by strikes by Fowler and Jeschke to go up 4-0 with 3:18 remaining in the first quarter.
From there, things took a turn with Yale winning 11 of the next 12 draw controls, resulting in 10 goals in a row for the Bulldogs. Mascone was able to add her third of the day late in the second quarter, but the Bears would go into the half down 10-5.
The third quarter saw Brown outscore Yale 3-2 thanks to two goals from Caputo and one from Fowler. Trailing by four to start the fourth, DeRosa and Mascone scored the first two of the frame to cut the deficit to 12-10 with 11:53 remaining in the game.
Unfortunately for the Bears, that's as close as they would get as Yale quickly pushed its lead back to four. Brown would get within two twice more, but Mascone's shot that was saved by the Bulldogs with one minute remaining was the Bears final look on goal of the game. Yale was able to clear and run out the clock to preserve the win.
Both teams were perfect on clears on the day, 15-for-15 for Brown and 12-for-12 for Yale. The big difference came on draw controls as the Bulldogs won 22 to the Bears' 10.
Brown will return home next Saturday, April 9 to take on No. 10 Princeton at 1 p.m.
