HOUSTON – Laurel Moody's three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning was all Brown needed to close out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist on Sunday (March 6).
The Bears managed a couple base runners over the first four innings but were not able to get anything on the board. Houston Baptist struck first in the bottom of the fourth. The first batter of the inning for HBU reached on an error and after a strikeout, back-to-back singles loaded the bases. Brown starter Alexis Guevara walked in the first run of the game but buckled down and got the next two outs without giving up any more runs.
Both offenses were quiet in the fifth but Brown finally broke through in a big way in the sixth. With one out, Lauren Innerst singled and Guevara singled in the next at bat to put two runners on. Julia Gubner struck out for the second out of the inning. With an 0-2 count, Moody stepped to the plate and crushed the pitch over the left center field wall for the three-run home run. It was Moody's second home run of the season.
"This win was a full team effort. Laurel Moody was not only clutch with her three-run shot, but she called a terrific game against a good-hitting Houston Baptist team," said head coach Kate Refsnyder. "Both pitchers executed well and the defense gave a solid effort all around. We grew as a team this weekend and will continue to do so with seven more games over the next seven days."
Innerst, who came into the game in the fifth to pitch for Guevara, allowed runners to get to first and second with one out but got a strikeout for out number two. The next at bat saw a hot shot to third swallowed up by Katie O'Leary, who beat the runner to the base to end the inning.
Brown got runners to second and third with no outs after a leadoff double by Brianna Rodriguez and a single by O'Leary but the Bears were not able to add any insurance runs.
In the seventh, Innerst set the Huskies down in order to give Brown the two-run victory.
Guevara and O'Leary led the lineup with two hits each. Innerst earned her second win of the season.
