Men's Hockey Falls in Overtime to St. Lawrence in Game Three of ECAC First Round Series
3/6/2022 7:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
CANTON, N.Y. – Brown and St. Lawrence went to overtime for the second straight night and fourth time this season, but it was the Saints who scored the overtime winner to take the decisive third game of the ECAC First Round Series Sunday at Appleton Arena.
"As I said last night these are two evenly-matched teams, they just got the last goal. Good for them, they had some adversity, they lost a really good player and found a way to come back and win the game," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It's just Athletics, it's life, you work so hard for things and sometimes you don't get them. There are always lessons learned, it's just hard right now. It's a great group of guys, they didn't get to play last year and wear the jersey. There were ups and downs this season, but we definitely grew as a team."
After a back-and-forth, chippy start to the game, Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (26 saves) made a big save on Aleksi Peltonen's slot shot 9:45 into the first period to keep the game scoreless.
For the first time this series, the Bears struck first as Michael Maloney potted his 10th goal of the season 12:29 into the frame on the first power play chance for either team. James Crossman wired a pass to Maloney from the top of the right circle to Maloney on the left post for the marker. Brett Bliss added the secondary assist on the goal.
Brown's offense continued the pressure following the opening tally and sophomore Matt Sutton nearly doubled Brown's lead 15:52 into the period, but his shot hit the post.
Less than 90 seconds after Sutton rang iron, Jordan Tonelli found a Bliss rebound and beat St. Lawrence goaltender Emil Zetterquist (22 saves) to give the Bears a 2-0 lead at 17:14.
The Saints cut into Brown's lead at 18:35 of the opening period following a net-front scramble. Philippe Chapleau took the initial shot, which was tracking wide, but the puck hit Justin Paul's shin pad and found the back of the net. The officials reviewed the play for goaltender interference, but confirmed the call on the ice.
Brown went on a five-minute power play 20 seconds into the middle period after Max Dorrington laid a vicious hit to the head of Bradley Cocca. Dorrington was assessed a major and misconduct following a review. However, the Bears were unable to capitalize on the extended power play.
Tristan Crozier netted his third short-handed goal of the season 11:11 into the second period to make it 3-1 Bears. Saints defenseman Luc Salem whiffed on a slap shot to give the captain a breakaway on Zetterquist.
The Saints found the back of the net just 28 seconds after Crozier's marker to bring the game back within one. Ty Naaykens had the goal, finding a Luke Erickson rebound on the post.
St. Lawrence pressed in the third looking for the equalizer, and Cameron Buhl scored at 11:51 of the period to even the score at 3-3.
Brown's penalty killers went to work less than a minute after Buhl's goal, and held the Saints without a shot on goal, blocking four shots to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
Reilly Moran scored the game-winner for the Saints 46 seconds into the overtime period.
