HOUSTON – Brown softball split its two games on Saturday, falling to Houston Baptist before beating Prairie View 10-2 in five innings.
Kat Clum led the way with three hits on the day. Five other Bears finished the two games with two hits. Lauren Innerst picked up her first win on the season.
GAME 1: HOUSTON BAPTIST 4, BROWN 2
Brown controlled most of the game against Houston Baptist but walks and an error in a four-run fourth inning for the Huskies was the deciding factor in the opening game of the day.
No team managed any runs through the first two innings but the Bears got on the board in the third. Katie O'Leary walked to start the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. A groundout by Leah Carey moved O'Leary to third and Brown's third baseman scored on an error by HBU on a bunt from Elayna Tsiouplis. Clum doubled past a diving center fielder to put two runners on and a but from Innerst scored Brown's second run of the game.
An error by Brown put the first batter on for HBU and after a groundout, single and walk, the Huskies had the bases loaded. Another walk, this one on four pitches, brough home a run and chased starter Jodie Aguirre. Grace Ladd walked the first batter she faced, tying the game. Ladd got a groundout for the second out of the inning but an error by Gormley at short allowed two more runs to score.
Brown got a runner to second with two outs in the sixth but couldn't manage a two-out rally. The Bears also got a runner to second with two outs in the seventh but a groundout ended the game.
GAME 2: BROWN 10, PRAIRIE VIEW 2 F/5
Brown earned a five inning, run-rule victory over Prairie View to close out the day. The Bears exploded early against the Panthers scoring four runs in both the first and the second inning.
Clum, Alexis Guevara, Brianna Rodriguez and O'Leary all finished with two hits as Brown finished the game with 13.
The first inning began with a walk to Leah Carey. Clum singled and after an out, Guevara singled to load the bases. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Meghan Gormley, Dara English and Rodriguez each brough home a run. Two batters later, Vanessa Alexander was hit by a pitch to bring home the fourth run of the inning.
In the second, Clum and Innerst singled to start the inning. Guevara reached on an error to load the bases. After a foul out, Brown got its first run of the inning on a sac fly by English. Rodriguez walked with two outs to keep the inning alive and loaded the bases. O'Leary delivered the biggest blow of the game with a double to right center field to unload the bases and put Brown up 8-0.
Prairie View broke through with a two-out, two-run single against Innerst to make the game 8-2.
With one out in the fourth, Julia Gubner hit a pinch hit double and with two outs, Rodriguez doubled to bring home Gubner, making the game 9-2.
Brown closed out the game in the fifth, thanks in part to miscues by the Panthers. Lauren Long led off with a walk and moved to second on a groundout by Clum. During the next at bat, Long took third on a passed ball and scored as the throw from the catcher got past the third baseman.
