PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Minutemen (5-3, 0-0 CAA) handed the 17th-ranked Brown Bears (5-3, 0-1 Ivy League) its first home loss of the season Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field, taking a 10-7 non-conference win.
Ryan Aughavin paced the Bears offensively with two goals while George Grell and Trevor Yeboah-Kodie both finished with a goal and an assist.
"It's a shame, I feel we let a lot of people down today and didn't perform to our ability," said head coach Mike Daly. "Credit to UMass as always, I thought they were tough and worked hard, but at the end of the day we didn't make the plays we're capable of and that hurts from a win-loss standpoint and a program standpoint, all of our alums and supporters, it's just not acceptable."
The Minutemen held the Bears scoreless in the first quarter and Kevin Tobin's lone tally in the opening 15 minutes gave UMass the early lead.
Brown's offense came to life in the second quarter as Aughavin struck twice and Antonelli added his 15th goal of the season to put the Bears ahead, 3-1, with 11:10 to play in the frame.
After Gabriel Procyk and Tobin brought the score back to even, Yeboah-Kodie and Reed Moshyedi tallied back-to-back goals for a 5-3 Bruno lead. A late UMass goal from Shane O'Leary made it 5-4 Bears at the half.
Griffin King scored his sixth goal of the season 1:34 into the third quarter to make it 6-5 Bears, but from there it was all UMass as the Minutemen struck for three straight goals to finish the quarter and take an 8-6 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Mike Tobin extended the UMass lead to begin the fourth and Kevin Tobin added his third of the game with 2:43 remaining to push the Minutemen lead to 10-6.
Grell found the back of the net off a quick feed from Yeboah-Kodie to score the game's final goal with 2:25 remaining.
"We're moving forward and onto the next one," Daly added. "We still have every opportunity in front of us, every opportunity in the season, and all of our goals are still in front of us. So, we'll get back to work and fight our way out of it."
