INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior Tobey McDonough went the distance on the mound in game one, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing four runs (three earned) with one walk while striking out five.
- Freshman Santhosh Gottam tossed five innings in game two, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four.
- Sophomore Paxton Meyers tossed three perfect innings of relief with five strikeouts to finish off game two on the mound.
- Senior Derian Morphew had two hits in game one, including a successful safety squeeze RBI.
- Reece Rappoli and Jackson Hipp had three hits apiece over the two games.
- Nathan Brasher added two hits and one run scored on the afternoon.
GAME ONE
- McDonough mowed through the first eight hitters he faced before allowing a double and RBI single with two outs in the third that gave GWU a 1-0 lead.
- Brown evened things up in the fifth when Brasher drew a leadoff walk, then scored three batters later when Jacob Burley singled to left field.
- Brown jumped in front in the top of the sixth after singles by Hipp and Ray Sass put men at the corners with one out. Morphew stepped up to the plate and executed a safety squeeze to score Hipp with the go-ahead run, and reached first on a single.
- With two outs, Gunner Boree delivered an RBI knock through the left side to score Sass and give Brown a two-run cushion.
- Gardner-Webb responded with one big swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer by Curtis Robison that proved to be the game-winning hit.
- Brown stranded 11 runners on base to GWU's three, while outhitting the Runnin' Bulldogs 10-6.
GAME TWO
- Gottam did not surrender a run through the first four innings of work in game two. After the Runnin' Bulldogs put men at the corners with two out in the third, Gottam, Rappoli and Burley teamed up to nab the runner at the plate on a double steal attempt to escape the inning.
- GWU plated both their runs in the fifth inning, the first of which was unearned after an error and an RBI double to start the inning, followed by a one-out RBI single to make it 2-0.
- Brown put the leadoff batter on base in the sixth and seventh innings, and put another runner on in the eighth, but stranded all four runners.
- Meyers came on in relief the sixth inning and retired all nine batters he faced to keep the Bears in the game.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "Honestly, we're not playing our best baseball right now. I think the good thing is we continue to learn a lot and are trying to accelerate and get reps in preparation for Ivy League play. We still saw a lot of good stuff, but just not enough of it."
- "Tobey threw the ball well. While we didn't make a lot of mistakes on the mound, they capitalized on each of his mistakes, and that was unfortunately the difference in game one today."
- "Santhosh threw the ball well and Paxton continued to do well out of the bullpen. They gave us a chance to compete offensively, and again we just didn't get enough today."
