16th-Ranked Men’s Lacrosse Grinds Out 10-7 Win Over Stony Brook
3/12/2022 2:32:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goalie Connor Theriault recorded a career-high 18 saves and junior Devon McLane tallied five goals as the 16th-ranked Brown Bears (5-1, 0-0 Ivy League) turned a 5-3 halftime deficit into a 10-7 win Saturday afternoon over the Stony Brook Seawolves (4-2, 0-0 AE) at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"I thought that was a great job by our assistant coaches in preparing our team," said head coach Mike Daly. "It was obviously tough weather, it was pretty sloppy, but we came out in the second half with the assistant putting the offensive guys in position and we started scoring some goals. Defensively we kept getting stops, and it was just a great team performance and great win by the players. The guys really gutted that one out."
The rain picked up throughout the morning and started to fall heavily as the first quarter began. Both teams struggled to find their footing in an opening 15 minutes that saw two goals from Darian Cook with Mike McMahon and Dylan Pallonetti scoring for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook out-scored Brown 3-1 in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the half. The Bears had six turnovers in the frame and four shots on goal, three of which were stopped by Stony Brook goalie Anthony Palma (11 saves).
Ryan Aughavin scored the lone Brown goal of the second quarter, fighting through a defender for his 10th goal of the season.
Brian Antonelli potted his first of the afternoon and Cook completed the hat trick in the opening minutes of the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5. From there, it was the Devon McLane show as he scored four straight goals to give the Bears a 9-5 lead with 2:11 to play in the third quarter.
All four of McLane's goals were assisted, with helpers coming from Aughavin, Cook, Porter Hollen, and George Grell.
Matt Anderson ended Brown's six-goal run with his second of the game with 1:31 remaining in the third.
McLane picked up where he left off in the fourth quarter and made it 10-6 Bears with his fifth of the game in the first minute of the final quarter. Anderson added another for the Seawolves with 8:13 remaining.
Theriault recorded three of his 18 saves in the final quarter.
"We're still looking to put together that complete game. We've had a lot of flashes of it we just need to continue to build on that consistency and play on that level for 60 minutes," Daly added.
Brown opens Ivy League conference play next Saturday (Mar. 19) at Harvard (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
