Gymnastics Earns Win on Senior Night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Posting their second-highest score of the season, the Brown gymnastics team topped Bridgeport by a score of 193.500-189.250 in a dual meet on Friday evening.
Following the meet, the Bears recognized their five-member senior class of 2022 in Mei Li Costa, Alyssa Gardner, Safiya Miller, Sophia Petrillo and Abby Walsh.
Brown swept the podium on vault, beam and floor, while taking first and third places on bars. Sophomore Angela Xing took home gold on vault, Costa won bars, freshman Taylor Schulze took first on beam, and junior Carolanne Van Zandt took first place on floor.
Brown started off the meet strong, scoring 48.625 on vault with Brown sweeping the top five places overall. Xing took first place (9.775), followed by Costa (9.750), junior Ella Poley (career-high 9.725), freshman Julia Bedell (9.725) and sophomore Lauren Kramer (career-high 9.650).
Costa led the way for Brown on bars, following up last weekend's school record performance with a 9.850 on senior night. Sophomore Paige Richter followed in third place with 9.725 points. Abby Contello (9.675) and Schulze (9.625) also had strong showing for Brown, as did Sophia Petrillo at 9.575.
Next up on beam, Schulze continued her strong freshman season with a first-place routine of 9.800. Junior Lauren Lazaro and sophomore McKenna Weiner helped Brown sweep the top three spots with their season-high marks of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. Miller also set a new career-high with her beam routine.
Wrapping up the meet on floor, Van Zandt took home the gold with her routine by earning 9.875 points, surpassing her previous career-high of 9.775. Walsh followed right behind in second place, tying her career-high of 9.750, hitting the mark for the second straight meet and the third time in her last four meets. Bedell followed in third place at 9.750, and Lazaro scored 9.675. Freshman Maya Davis posted a new career-high of 9.625 on her exhibition.
The Bears will square off against New Hampshire, Penn State and Southern Connecticut State in their final regular season meet on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Durham, N.H.
