3/13/2022 6:46:00 PM | Women's Gymnastics
DURHAM, N.H. – The Brown women's gymnastics team set the program's vault record, and set season-highs on both bars and beam en route to scoring 194.675 in Sunday's quad meet, the second-highest all-around score in program history.
This is the second time in the last three meets that Brown has set the second-highest score in team history, with Sunday's all-around surpassing the previous season-high of 194.600 from March 6.
Overall, Brown finished Sunday's quad meet in third place, with Penn State taking first place (196.550), followed by New Hampshire (195.775), with Southern Connecticut State finishing in fourth with 190.400 points. Mei Li Costa scored 9.925 on bars, tying her own spot for the second-highest in program history, Taylor Schulze scored 9.825 on bars and beam, and Julia Bedell led the team on floor and tied for the team's lead on vault.
"They just really attacked it today," said head coach Sara Carver-Milne. "This is our second weekend with two meets and in most cases they'd be tired, but they were pretty fired up that we're peaking now and they kept the energy up the entire competition. Ultimately, we're fighting for a nationals spot and that's been at the forefront of everyone's mind."
In the third rotation, Brown turned in the top vault score in program history of 48.925, surpassing the previous benchmark of 48.750 which they set twice in 2013 and 2019. Alyssa Gardner, Bedell and Costa all tied for fourth overall at 9.800. Angela Xing posted a 9.775 mark, followed by Ella Poley (9.750) and Lauren Kramer (9.700).
"In the competition, they were feeding off of everyone's energy," said Carver-Milne. "To start out with a 9.700 on vault, that's what we prepared and hoped for, and to keep one-upping each other, they were just electric today. It speaks volumes to the resilience and grit we have."
Starting off the meet on beam, the Bears posted a season-high 48.175, with Schulze scoring 9.825 to lead the way for Brown. McKenna Weiner tied her season-high for the second straight meet with 9.725, followed by Lauren Lazaro and Abby Contello who each scored 9.600.
Next up on floor, Brown totaled 48.500 with Bedell leading team by tying for fourth place with 9.850. Angela Xing followed with 9.725, and Lazaro tying her season-high at 9.700.
In the team's final rotation on bars, Brown posted another season-high of 49.075, just narrowly missing out on the program record of 49.125. It also marked the first time topping the 49-point mark in any event this season. Costa turned out a sensational routine of 9.925 to finish runner-up overall, tying her own record for the second-highest mark in program history behind only her school record performance from March 6. Abby Contello set a new career-high of 9.850, followed by Schulze (9.825), Poley (9.750), Sophia Petrillo (9.725) and Paige Richter (9.650).
"Abby Contello has been on a mission encouraging the entire team," said Carver-Milne. "Nationals are back near her hometown and she's been calculating the numbers and what scores we need. Seeing her perform so well and be so driven for the entire team has been amazing, and she earned a career-high on bars today with a beautiful routine. Seeing her confidence grow throughout the season has been incredibly rewarding."
With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, the Bears will turn their focus to the inaugural GEC Championship, which will be hosted at the Pizzitola Sports Center next Saturday with the Ber competing in the evening session at 6 p.m.
